Bubble back gel packs are also sometimes known as antifreeze or freeze proof ice packs. These bubble ice packs are commonly used in cold chain applications in the pharmaceutical industry in situations where the products or specimens that are stored closer to the gel pack receive more of the cold energy and thereby can sometimes affect the integrity of the specimen or product by causing a freeze burn. Sometimes the gel packs work so well that they may actually freeze the complete specimen which can sometimes affect the integrity of the product. A good example of this is chocolate. The bubble wrap on one side of the ice pack acts as an insulation barrier between the specimen and the ice pack.
