Gel Packs commonly known as ice packs come in various formulations to suit specific cold chain requirements. The most common gel packs usually have a freezing temperature of 0°C and can go down below to -4°C. These ordinary gel packs are not the right solution to shipping food and pharma products cold below ambient temperatures. As a part of the activate-on-demand range of products, Cryolux manufactures the fill and freeze range in two models; reusable and disposable sweat proof. These ice packs have the same benefits of the soak and freeze except that these are made in one huge block and cannot be cut to size. The fill and freeze product is designed with a special one-way valve that only takes water one way and wouldn’t release the water back out. These fill and freeze (self-fill) ice packs are a lot easier to activate compared to the dry ice packs. These can be filled right under a tap in a few seconds and can be frozen immediately. These fill and freeze blocks generally stay frozen for much longer than other ice packs thanks to the phase change formulation used in these ice packs. The water enters through the valve and reacts with the PCM salts to form a gel that has a superior freeze duration. The fill and freeze ice packs are also delivered flat hence they are light and compact to store, and hence cost-effective to ship. Overall, these ice packs tick all the boxes.
